Dive sites in Mexico

Aquarium, known locally as El Acuario, sits inside the protected Puerto Morelos Reef National Park. An elongated spur-and-groove coral ridge rises over sandy channels. Divers drift along the barrier reef wall, where clusters of sea fans, brain corals, and gorgonians shelter Caribbean reef fauna.

The C-56 Juan Escutia, an Admirable-class minesweeper built for the US Navy and later transferred to Mexico, rests upright on a sand plain off Puerto Morelos. Sunk as an artificial reef, its hull has fractured amidships, opening passages into the engine rooms and corridors. Encrusting sponges, gorgonians, and stony corals coat the superstructure, drawing pelagic schools and ambush predators.

Cenote Angelita drops as a sheer vertical cylinder into the jungle floor, distinct from horizontal cavern systems. At depth, decaying organic debris forms a thick, milky hydrogen sulfide cloud, pierced by bare tree branches and a central mound. Descending beneath this opaque layer brings pitch darkness and dense saltwater before the ascent back into clear freshwater.

Fish Market sits inside the Puerto Morelos National Reef Park along a shallow barrier reef. Spur-and-groove coral ridges alternate with white sand channels, sheltering the dense fish schools that give the site its name. Mild currents allow ample time to inspect low overhangs and undercut ledges.

Mini Wall sits within the protected Puerto Morelos National Marine Park along the Riviera Maya. A low coral ridge drops to a sandy floor lined with undercut ledges, crevices, and sponge-encrusted limestone where marine life shelters. Divers drift the contour with the northward current to inspect small caverns along the base.

North of central Playa del Carmen, Moc-Che's elongated coral ridge runs parallel to the Riviera Maya coast. Divers drift past the reef wall and sandy channels, watching marine life shelter among low-profile coral spurs, sea fans, and brain coral heads.

Off Land's End in the Cabo San Lucas Marine Park, a rocky wall descends into a submarine canyon. Sand pours over submerged ledges here, forming the underwater sand falls first documented by Jacques Cousteau. Protected shallows shelter schools of reef fish, while pelagic species and California sea lions patrol the drop-off.
